Course description

The Engagement Model is an assessment system that supports schools in evaluating the appropriateness of the curriculum provided for pupils who are non-subject specific learners, not yet meeting all of Pre Key Stage Standard 1.  Using the 5 areas of engagement: initiation, persistence, exploration, anticipation and realisation teachers are able to observe and assess the level of engagement for individual pupils.

Matt McArthur from Whole School SEND will review the core principles of the Engagement Model.  There will be an opportunity to:

  • share examples of temples for recording Engagement in different settings

  • explore their practical use both in 1:1 interventions and within inclusive whole class lessons

  • explore how to use information drawn from these observations of Engagement to plan future learning objectives

It would be helpful if you could bring examples of templates or practice to share.  This session is suitable for primary, secondary, specialist and centres.

Training objectives

To benefit from training on DfE guidance and materials on the Engagement models in advance of September 2021.
