Sensory processing is the way we process information we receive from the environment and our bodies and then use this information to respond appropriately.

We all have sensory differences and preferences.  Some of us like very strong tastes and smells like spicy foods, garlic, blue cheese, whilst others avoid them.  Some people enjoy a day of going on as many roller coaster rides as they can, whilst others would avoid even a slow roundabout or swing.  As long as we can manage to take part in the things we want and need to do these sensory professing differences don't matter or need support.  It only becomes a problem if they impact on our ability to carry out the activities we need to do.

For some children their sensory development is delayed or disordered, and this impacts on their ability to take part in everyday childhood occupations.  A child might be so distressed by noise, they miss out on a friend's party or avoid the busy parts of the playground, missing out on opportunities to practise and develop their motor skills.  A child may hit out when someone brushes up against them when lining up or sitting near them at carpet time as they experience it as painful.

This is a two part session.  Delegates should attend both sessions.  This workshop aims to give an overview of the development of communication and interaction skills including the fundamentals of communication.  It introduces strategies and direct interventions to support pre-verbal children to develop their early communication and interaction skills.

Teachers and education support staff in EYs, KS1 and KS2 settings who support pre-verbal children with Autism or Social Communication difficulties.

This course consists of 3 online sessions.  All days must be attended.

Word Aware is a structured whole school approach to promote the vocabulary development of all children.  Focused on whole class learning, the resource is of particular value for those who start at a disadvantage - including children with Developmental Language Disorder, Special Educational Needs and those who speak English as an additional language, but it will extend the word learning of all students.

Word Aware is a fast-paced, fun and interactive course.  You will leave the session with lots of practical ideas on how to develop vocabulary in your school.

AIMS:

  • Explore how children learn vocabulary and why it is important
  • Put the new curriculum guidance on vocabulary into practise
  • Learn a structured approach to teaching vocabulary in the classroom
  • Plan how you will support vocabulary in your setting

IDEAL FOR:

This course is suitable for Speech & Language Therapists, Class Teachers, Curriculum Co-ordinatros, Specialist Teachers, Headteachers, SENCOs and Educational Psychologists.

Anxiety is a constant companion of many autistic children and can affect their mental health.  This course looks at the complex nature of anxiety in autistic children and young people and how we can support mental wellbeing.

Lynn McCann draws on her years of supporting autistic young people in schools to share some of the realities of what contributes to anxiety.  Delegates will explore teaching resources that have made a positive impact on young people with anxiety.

Lynn McCann is the author of "How to support children with ASC in Primary School" and "How to support students with ASC in Secondary School" published by LDA 2017.  She also writes regularly for the TES blog, and has published articles in SENCO magazine, NASEN Connect and Optimun SEND magazine (Autism and SRE and How to write social stories).  She has also completed the National Autistic Society Assessor training.

Code: CPD/22/51 SEND: Supporting children and young people with demand avoidant behaviours & Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA)

Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA) is a complex autism spectrum condition characterised by high anxiety and a need to be in control. As a result of high anxiety individuals with PDA can find everyday demands and requests intolerable. Often children and young people with PDA can display behaviours that are challenging to others.

This course will be relevant to staff who work with or support families who have children with autism and a demand avoidant profile. The course is interactive and will equip attendees with a range of strategies to use, or to advise parents to use when working with or caring for children with PDA.

This course will cover the basic theory around PDA and provide attendees with an excellent “toolkit” of strategies that they can use or pass on to those who care for children with PDA.

This training session will be delivered by Laura Kerbey founder of Positive Autism Support and Training. Laura has been working with children and young people with autism and other special needs for over 15 years. She was the Assistant Head Teacher, then Head Teacher at an independent special school for children with Asperger's Syndrome and High Functioning Autism.

ADHD is one of the most common childhood conditions and it can continue through adolescence and into adulthood. ADHD is thought to affect between 3-9% of school age children and young people in the UK (NICE, 2013).


Likewise, around 700,000 people in the UK are on the Autism Spectrum. Together with their families they make up around 2.8 million people whose lives are touched by Autism in the UK alone (National Autism Society, 2016).


This course covers how Autism and ADHD present and interact in individual children. The course provides practical strategies to help practitioners support pupils with both ADHD and ASD as well as support pupils who present with social communication needs and attention difficulties without a formal diagnosis.
